My name is Amanda and I'm 42 years old. I can confidently tell you my age now because, well, I don't look it! But it wasn't always like that.
Soon after I turned 40, I started feeling increasingly obsessed by the thought that my beauty would diminish in no time. If I could convince myself that I don't need Botox in my 30s, I pondered, I will not be able to do the same in my 40s.
Older Women Are Ruthlessly Targeted To Feel Bad About Their Ageing
I was becoming more and more conscious about the changes on my face. It wasn't only because of the scare messages pouring from the media trying to convince women that their worth is going down with each year after their 30th birthday. It wasn't only TV ads and billboards on the streets selling expensive miracle creams and serums.
The fact is that most of my friends who are my age or even younger have long ago succumbed to the allure of quick-fix plastic surgery procedures. The tendencies among my girlfriends have terrified me for quite some time.
I was always trying to be a supportive friend, but I was afraid I was next. I was terrified that I wouldn't be strong enough to resist the dreadful Botox, fillers, and perhaps even a face and neck lift.
I was feeling anxious about betraying my values and my previous beliefs that ageing naturally is always better than any surgical intervention. I wanted to be like my Mom and my grandmothers who managed to age gracefully and naturally. Although, let's face it (pun intended), they didn't have much choice back in the day.
My Obsession With My External Beauty Was Going Against My Values

My face started changing so rapidly that I started panicking. I could see my old convictions going through the window.
Should I just come to terms that inner beauty takes over outer beauty after a certain age? Can I convince myself that other people will indeed value me just as much without my youthful looks?
Since I have two young girls, I always wanted to be a good example to them as their main female role model. I wanted them to always feel confident about their looks and not to know what is self-criticism or, God forbid, self-hatred.
I want my girls to grow into confident, strong, independent women who know their worth and truly believe that their happiness doesn't depend on their outer beauty.
But as the years rolled in, I started to feel increasingly consumed by my reflection in the mirror, seeing fewer and fewer things that I liked on my face. I started to feel scared of the future. I felt vain, superficial, and quite a hypocrite.
I was embarrassed to say anything about this to my husband who has always known me as an intelligent, well-educated, confident, and loving woman excited by deep conversations and true human connections. How could I possibly tell him that I'm feeling increasingly depressed because of the ageing signs on my face?..
Everything Changed When I Discovered A Thing Called Face Yoga
It was one of those ordinary lazy Sunday afternoons. My husband was making his special treat in the kitchen while I was resting on the couch together with my girls in front of a TV simultaneously scrolling on my phone.
Only this time an ad on my Instagram feed caught my attention like no other. It was an app called Luvly. The ad was claiming that within a few weeks of practicing face yoga, which I heard nothing about before, it's possible not only to stop the development of wrinkles and fine lines, but even reverse those signs of ageing on your face.
Obviously, I was quite sceptical at first. I've seen many ads trying to sell different beauty products and procedures, and since I'm that age, these ads are becoming more frequent on my feed.
But there was something quite different and intriguing about this app. I decided to do my own little research on face yoga to see if it's not just a new silly fad.
Face Yoga Is Real
Naturally, I went down the rabbit hole on YouTube in search of the truth about face yoga. I learned that face yoga has been around for quite some time and it is a very empowering way to not only preserve your beauty, but to even reverse the already visible signs of ageing.
Basically, face yoga consists of numerous targeted exercises and massage techniques for face and neck using your fingers and special little tools like crystal rollers and gua sha.
Suddenly, it all made perfect sense. I could definitely see the logic in improving your skin's and facial muscle condition with massage and exercises, just like you would do with the rest of your body.
Needless to say, I got inspired to try it out myself. What's the worst that could happen, really?
The Beginning Of My Love Affair With Luvly App
I went back to Luvly app and signed up for the program they suggested according to my answers to their questionnaire.
At the back of my head I was still fairly certain that, sooner or later, I'll have to follow many of my friends' footsteps and pay that dreadful first visit to a plastic surgeon. But I also thought that it wouldn't hurt to try face yoga first.
Being an overachiever all my life, I engaged with this app with my full commitment. Soon I've created a very pleasant self-care routine twice a day, morning and night.

I started reconnecting with myself and my face, giving it the attention and love it seemed to had been craving for so long. My 15-minute face yoga sessions twice a day, following detailed instructions on Luvly, have become my personal mini retreats in my own bathroom.
Just a couple of weeks in, my face started to feel fresher and look brighter.
Another couple of weeks later, people around started noticing the changes too!
I finally had hope again that I wouldn't need to go for invasive procedures to be happy about my face again.
I was not only feeling but looking younger too.
So How Does This App Actually Work?
All the content on the Luvly app has been created by beauty industry professionals, such as face yoga coaches, dermatologists, cosmetologists, and nutritionists. I was amazed to find hundreds of facial exercises and massage routines on this app.
Upon subscription I was offered a personalized face yoga exercise routine to sculpt, tighten, and brighten my face, targeting areas I was especially worried about, namely nasolabial folds, crow's feet, frowning wrinkles, and a double chin.
Aside from that, the app has many other truly helpful features, such as:
-
Cosmetics scanner that checks and 'translates' the ingredients in your beauty products for you. I had no idea how many toxins I had been putting on my face for years!
-
Progress tracker that monitors the changes in your skin condition every day. Very inspiring!
-
Breathing exercises that help me feel and look peaceful and relaxed.
-
Meal planner that gives suggestions for how to improve your diet to boost your overall health and the condition of your skin.
-
Luvly AR coach. It's a personal face yoga guide that helps the users to make sure they're doing the exercises and skincare right. AR coach scans the user's face through the smartphone's front camera.
It's Luvly's proprietary technology that I am truly impressed by, even though I'm not at all big with contemporary technology advancements. It does make me feel as if I have a personal coach with me making sure I'm doing everything right.
Now I Can't Image My Life Without Face Yoga. And Why Should I?

For best results, face yoga is something that professionals advise to practice indefinitely.
It may sound intimidating at first, I know. But how do you feel about brushing your teeth twice a day? It's quite a normal thing now, right?
Once I've developed a beauty routine, face yoga is something that I just can't live without! If I miss a day for one reason or another, I feel that my day is somewhat incomplete. These daily face yoga sessions have become my little self-love havens – pleasurable, intimate, nurturing, and inspiring.
I know that I've learned a ton of exercises, tips, and tricks during the past 2 years, but I'm still happily using Luvly for the support it provides me with. I'm also excited to see how it keeps on developing, offering users like me more and more helpful features and new face yoga exercises.
I Wish More Women Would Feel Empowered With Face Yoga, Starting In Young Age
I'm happy to be able to pass on my knowledge and skills of face yoga to my daughters so they would never need to worry about their beauty the way I worried before discovering this practice later in life. I wish more women knew about it.
If you feel that your confidence and self-worth is diminishing with the changes on your face year after year, give face yoga a try. I promise you won't regret it.
There's quite a lot of information online, but I do encourage trying out Luvly for that extra support, accountability, making sure you're doing the exercises right, and bringing that fun factor into the mix!

Ah, this article definitely stroke a chord... Plastic surgery and Botox are too easily available these days. I'm also grateful that there are natural alternatives like face yoga. I'm on my 3rd week on Luvly and I'm loving it!

My story is so similar. Though I managed to reach my 50s until I started panicking, haha! I agree that more women should know about face yoga. And young girls need to know how to age gracefully and use natural ways to preserve their beauty. You are a great role model for your girls, Amanda!
